In order to support the
children's developing reading needs, your child will be bringing
home a leveled book. Books are leveled from Emergent (Level 1)
to Challenge (Levels 8-10). On Monday and Friday (8:30-9:00),
your child will be evaluated on his/her reading fluency by a
parent volunteer, teacher, teacher's aid, or older peer. After
successfully reading 10 books, your child will advance to the
next level and be awarded a reading certificate. Students
requiring more support with reading fluency will take the same
book home for further practice. Students needing support with a
specified level of text may be required to read 20 books before
advancing to the next level. Evaluation will occur on the next
evaluation day. All book selections will be documented on a
student profile sheet, but only fluent readings will be
counted toward advancement to the next higher leveled book.
Fluent readers may be honored by being selected to read to their
classmates in the Reader's Chair.
Students reading extended text (Levels
8-10) must show advancement of pages read on each evaluation date.
PARENT VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED FOR THE
SUCCESS OF THIS ENDEAVOR.
If you can serve as a volunteer, even for
